Much of the agriculture that exists in Latin America today is rooted in displacement. Seeds brought from elsewhere found fertile ground in the region’s ecological diversity and were widely cultivated. Crops such as soy, eucalyptus, bananas, and coffee have become central not only to agriculture, but also to the continent’s economies, politics, and questions of sovereignty.
Yet these seeds did not arrive alone—they were carried by systems of power. Many are controlled by multinational corporations that extract resources, concentrate profits, and leave producing countries in cycles of volatility and diminished autonomy. The displacement of seeds has thus enabled another form of displacement: that of the people whose knowledge and traditions predate them. These communities, however, continue to carry their heritage. Like seeds, they take root in new environments, sustaining memory and identity despite displacement. This heritage lives not only in practice but as a way of thinking—through storytelling, remembrance, and acts of continuity. In collaboration with the immigrant and queer dance collective Warawas, this living heritage is carried in the body and kept alive through movement, where dance becomes a site of transmission and resilience in belonging.
Through the work of weaving a tapestry that brings together people, landscapes, and soil, I reclaim seeds as both metaphor and material reality—revealing the layered identities they hold. By materializing the images through the seeds themselves, They are shown as a form of heritage carried across generations, reflecting the impact of monocultures and European corporate power in Latin America, while also embodying cultural memory: something transported, replanted, and tended by those who refuse to lose what came before. To claim these seeds is to make visible what exists on both sides—the connection to a place of origin and the experience of building life in a new one.
